Thiemo reaches main draw after comeback

Thiemo reached the main draw of the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday. The Dutchman had a strong comeback in his 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Lukasz Kubot from Poland.

The 28-year old Kubot caused Thiemo problems with strong ground strokes in the opening set. The Haarlem resident gained more grip on his opponent’s play from the second set and started to serve better. He repaired a 0-2 deficit in the third and took full control of the match. Thiemo sealed his fourth matchpoint to record a second consecutive win, for the first time since the US Open 2010.

“He overpowered me as soon as I did not hit the ball well in the first set”, told the 22-year old after his victory. “I just tried to hang in there and he began to produce more errors. I am happy about the way I have fought for this match, it is never easy playing against these type of guys.”

‘Thiemo shows himself’
Coach Raemon Sluiter was satisfied about Thiemo’s response during the match. “A good match. He grabbed his chances and did not let go in the third set. It is important he wins some matches in a row and shows he is out there.” Thiemo will know his next opponent this Sunday evening.
