Thiemo advances to final qualifying round

Thiemo advances at the Mutua Madrid Open after beating Roberto Bautista-Agut (ESP) in three sets on Saturday: 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 6-3. The 22-year old will meet Lukasz Kubot (POL) in the final qualifying round. It was his first victory since March 4, when he defeated Illya Marchenko (UKR) in the Davis Cup.

Mixed feelings took possession of Thiemo after the match, which had two rain delays. “He was playing and serving well from the beginning, while I didn’t feel comfortable. I moved very bad, that wasn’t the case the past days”, explained the Dutchman. “So it was frustrating because I want to give it the best I can.”

“I began to play better after the first delay (in the second set, red.). I attacked more en felt more confidence in the third set. I am happy how I have ended this match and think about tomorrow now.” It will be the first time Thiemo and Kubot meet on ATP level. Their match is the second one on court 6 of the Manzanares tennis park on Sunday.
