Unfortunately no winning tour return

Unfortunately Thiemo couldn’t seal his ATP World Tour return with a victory in the first round of the Estoril Open. The South African Kevin Anderson defeated the Dutchman in three sets on Monday:  5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

It was Thiemo’s first appearance since a tooth infection held him out of action for six weeks. Despite loss, he can look back at a promising performance. The 22-year old started well and took the tense first set with 7-5, including a nice passing shot and backhand winner in the decisive twelfth game to break the number seventh seed.

Thiemo felt Anderson’s pressure the following two sets and had to fight more and more for his games. He started also to feel a stiff groin due to the long rallies and the lack of match rhythm. Thiemo gave his best, called the ATP fysio to get treatment, but it was Anderson who took the match after 2,5 hours (6-3, 6-2).

With the regained feeling of playing matches, the Dutchman gets a new chance at Masters tournament of Madrid. Thiemo will appear in the qualifiers, starting this Saturday.
