'Kept hope of staying in the team'

Thiemo gave a satisfied reaction after receiving his invitation for the Davis Cup team. It was uncertain if head coach Jan Siemerink would pick the Dutchman because of his current non-playing period. "I always kept hope of staying in the team."

“It is difficult when you don’t play a lot, but I am valuable for the team when my physical condition is in shape”, told Thiemo after receiving the news. “I always like to play Davis Cup, it is really something to look forward to. We have a great team and we always like to hang out with each other.”

Robin Haase called Kevin Anderson as South Africa’s biggest weapon for the tie in July. “Definitely, it makes a big difference if he will play or not. It would increase our chances if he doesn’t play”, confirmed the current world number 85. Recently in Estoril, Anderson defeated him in three sets.

The tie will be played in Potchefstroom, which lies 1.400 meters above sea level. “I have never played before in South Africa, but I have positive experiences with playing on high altitude”, referred Thiemo to Madrid (altitude: 700 meters), where he won three matches in May.
