Thiemo in Davis Cup squad

Thiemo will be in the Dutch Davis Cup squad for the tie against South Africa on 8, 9 and 10 July in Potchefstroom. The team of head coach Jan Siemerink travels on Friday, 1 July to Johannesburg.

The captain admits he had doubts on choosing Thiemo in his squad, since the 22-year old prefers a training period instead of playing the UNICEF Open and Wimbledon. “He lacks rhythm, but we don’t want to take risks. We have to be prepared for everything”, told Siemerink during a press conference on Thursday. “Thiemo has experience in playing Davis Cup and likes to represent his country. He currently works hard and knows what to do to be prepared for the tie.”

South Africa and the Netherlands start their match on Friday, 8 July on 10:00 a.m. “The Potchefstroom stadium has no light and it will be dark around 5:30 p.m.”, explained Siemerink. “We will travel early to Johannesburg to get used to the altitude (1.400 meters, red.). The temperature will be between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, so the conditions will be different.”

Robin Haase, Thomas Schoorel, Jesse Huta Galung and Igor Sijsling complete the Dutch team. ‘Oranje’ will stay in Johannesburg until Monday, 4 July before travelling to Potchefstroom. South Africa has chosen hard court as surface.
